About Steve Waugh
Originally called Stephen Rodger Waugh and professionally known as Steve Waugh is a veteran Australian cricketer. He played as a medium-pace bowler and a right-handed batsman. With over 10,000 Test runs and 41 victories, he is widely considered as one of the greatest Test captains of cricket.
Background & Early Career
He was born in New South Wales. Steve is the twin brother of fellow cricketer Mark Waugh.
He attended New South Wales Primary School, where he captained the soccer team and vice-captained the cricket team. Together with his brother, they were instrumental in the school's unbeaten run to win the cricket carnival. He is an alumnus of East Hills Boys Technology High School.
Career Highlights
The sportsman began his first-class cricket career in 1984. He became the captain of Australia's Test cricket team from 1999 until 2004 and earned 168 caps. He led the country to win the 1999 Cricket World Cup and set a record of sixteen straight Test wins. His 72% winning ratio was one of the best for a Test captain in history.
In 2004, his philanthropic works earned him the honor of the "Australian of the Year." He became an ICC Cricket Hall of Famer in January 2010.
