About Steve Biko
Renowned South African civil right activist, Steve Biko is best known as the founder of the Black Consciousness Movement. He was instrumental in the fight against the apartheid system in his country and was a popular figure during the 1960s and 70s.
In 1973, he received a ban from the apartheid regime and people were asked not to quote his speeches in the country. He was, however, arrested in 1977 after he traveled to Cape Town, which was contrary to the ban.
Family
He’s the son of Alice 'Mamcete' Biko and Mzingaye Mathew Biko. His siblings are called Bukelwa, Khaya, and Nobandile. He made Ntsiki Mashalaba his wife in 1970 and left behind two children.
