About Stendhal
Stendhal was the pen name of French writer Marie-Henri Beyle who was regarded as one of the pioneers of the realism literary genre. Despite starting his career in the 1800s, Stendhal’s works became popular during the 20th Century, years after his death.
He was famously known for his 1830 novel titled “The Red and the Black (Le Rouge et le Noir)”. His other books such as “The Charterhouse of Parma (La Chartreuse de Parme)” and “Armance” have been praised by many scholars.
Family
He lost his mum at the age of seven years, and grew up alongside his junior sister named Pauline.
Facts
In 1810, he worked with the Conseil d'État as an auditor.
He worked under many nicknames including "Anastasius Serpière" and "Louis Alexandre Bombet".
In his 1817 book titled “Naples and Florence: A Journey from Milan to Reggio”, he explained a psychosomatic experience he encountered which would later be known as the “Stendhal syndrome”.
