Family and Education
He was born to a Jewish family. He went to Dewitt Clinton High School and studied Business Administration at New York University.
Marriages and Children
He got married three times and fathered four children. His first marriage, which lasted for only a short period, was to American actress Marilyn Erskine. After divorcing his second wife, Anne Pearce Kramer, in 1963, the filmmaker tied the knot with actress Karen Kay Sharpe in 1966.
Film Career
Kramar applied for petite works in the film industry. He served as a set furniture mover, writer at Columbia pictures, and an assistant producer to the film producer Loew-Lewin. He also served in the US army during World War II. He aided in producing training films and the productions included film makers like Anatole Litvak.
He founded his own production company named “Screen plays Incorporated” which he managed together with Herbie Baker and Carl Foreman who was a producer. The first movie introduced by the production was “So This Is New York” produced in 1948. His third movie “Home of the Brave” was successful as compared to the ones he released earlier. The movie was adapted into a play by Arthur Laurents. He renamed his company to “Stanley Kramer Company”.
He was offered to work in the studios of Colombia Pictures by Harry Cohn. At Colombia Pictures, he produced movies such as “The Member of the Wedding”, “The Wild One” and “The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T” which was written by Theodor Seuss Geisel.
As a director, the first film he directed was the 1955 film “Not as a Stranger”, which featured artists like Frank Sinatra and Olivia de Havilland. The movie was recorded as the highest grossing film that year.
Legacies
A Stanley Kramer Award was established by the Producers Guild of America to honor those who create awareness towards social issues.
Death
He died at age 87 from pneumonia.
