About Stanisław August Poniatowski
The final monarch of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Stanislaw II August Poniatowski, served as both king and grand duke from 1764-95. As a ruler he was powerless to stop the splintering of his country by Russia, Austria, and Prussia.
Background
To remove the reigning Polish ruler this nobleman approached the Russian court. In order to achieve his election as Stanislaw II on September 7, 1764, Catherine the Great, the ruler of Russia, employed Russian forces and influence.
He tried to enact some reforms during his first years as king. The Bar Confederation's Council declared him deposed in 1770 after he backed the Russian Army's suppression of the Bar confederation. He signed his resignation on November 25, 1795.
He was buried at the Catholic Church of St. Catherine in St. Petersburg after passing away from a stroke on February 12, 1798.
Trivia
He was allegedly Catherine the Great's lover.
