About Sophie Tucker
Affectionately known as the “The Last of the Red-Hot Mamas”, Sophie Tucker was a Russian-American musician and actress known for her amusing and often racy songs.
Early Life
Born Sophie Kalish in Russia, Tucker and her family immigrated to the United States when she was a baby. As a young girl, she started singing to customers in her parents’ restaurant for tips.
She married early at 17 to Louis Tuck in 1903, but the couple separated three years later. Her second marriage, to American pianist Frank Westphal, lasted from 1917 to 1920. She then tied the wedding knot with Al Lackey in 1928.
Career
Shortly after her separation, she met Harold Von Tilzer who was a well-known composer and theatrical producer in New York. Tucker began her vaudeville career in 1907. The producers decided to dress her as a minstrel singer because of her weight.
It wasn’t until the 1920s that Tucker got her first big break. She toured through Europe, performing her hit songs, including “Some of These Days” and “My Yiddishe Momme.” In 1929, she appeared in her first movie, “Honky Tonk.” In the later years of her career, she had a radio show called “The Roi Tan Program with Sophie Tucker.”
Personal Life
Tucker married three times in her lifetime. She died in 1966 shortly after her 80th birthday.
