About Sócrates
He was a physician and a writer but the career he got most known for was being a soccer player. He became a professional player for Botafogo-SP in 1974. He played in Italian Serie A between 1984 and 1985 with Florentina. He went on to play for Flamengo, Santos.
During the 1982 FIFA World Cup, he was the captain of the national team. He also was part of the team for the 1979 and 1983 Copa América tournaments.
Personal life
He was named Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira. He was born in Pará but relocated with the family to São Paulo. He got married a total of four times but none of the marriages worked and he did not live long enough to know how the fourth marriage was going to go. He was a father of six children. His health was challenged because of his smoking and drinking habits.
Death
He fell sick on the 19th of August 2011 and was hospitalized for gastrointestinal bleeding. About four months later, he was in the hospital for food poisoning and went into septic shock. He did not survive this time and died on the 4th of December in 2001.
