About Sholem Aleichem
Sholem Aleichem was a popular Yiddish writer who published his first novel in 1883. Most of his works were in the Hebrew and English languages. He was best known for his 1888 novel entitled “Stempenyu: A Jewish Novel”. His other popular publications included “Mottel the Cantor's son” and “Wandering Stars”.
As a playwright
Regarded as one of the most popular writers of his era, Aleichem wrote some popular plays such as 1899’s “Mazel Tov” and “The Golddiggers” which was first performed in 1907.
Family
He was originally known as Solomon Naumovich Rabinovich and was the son of Chaye-Esther and Menachem-Nukhem Rabinovich. He had six children with Olga Love.
Trivia
His tale titled “Tevye and his Daughters” inspired the musical “Fiddler on the Roof” which was released in 1964.
His pen name translates into English as "peace upon you!"
