About Shirley Chisholm
Shirley Anita Chisholm overcame countless hurdles to become the first African-American to contest for a major party (Democratic)’s presidential election nomination in 1972. Originally an educator, she joined politics in the early 1950s through her membership of the Belford-Stuyvesant League.
In 1964, she contested, amid strong resistance, for membership of the New York State Assembly and won. She also represented the state’s 12th district in congress (1969-1983). She was the first woman to vie for the Democratic Party’s nomination for the presidency.
Family Life
She was the daughter of Charles St. Hill and Ruby Seale, both Barbadian immigrants. From 1925 to 1934, she grew up with her grandmother in Barbados. She was married to Conrad Chisholm from 1949 to 1977. Her second husband was Arthur Hardwick.
Achievements
She has been a National Women’s Hall of Famer since 1993. She was posthumously honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.
