About Shinichi Suzuki
Japanese musician and educator Shinichi Suzuki is credited with creating the international Suzuki method of music education. As a prominent pedagogue in children's music education, he devoted his life conducting research works that usually concluded that skill is not inherent and that talent can be cultivated.
Background
His early years were spent working at his father's violin factory. After listening to violinist Mischa Elman performing Schubert's “Ave Maria” on tape, he taught himself how to play the violin.
He took lessons from a violin tutor before traveling to Germany, where he allegedly studied under professor Karl Klinger. Upon his return, he and his brothers established a string quartet.
He was of the opinion that, with the right instruction, all kids could learn music. This prompted his early music education support for kids. He started tutoring at the Imperial School of Music, where he later became president and the Kunitachi Music School in Tokyo.
His students, Toshiya Eto and Koji Toyoda, have garnered international acclaim and many top soloists and orchestra members began their musical careers as his students. He founded the Matsumoto Music School following World War II.
Personal Life
He wed German soloist Waltraud Prange.
