About Segundo Llorente
Segundo Llorente was a Jesuit missionary who spent four decades living in Alaska’s most remote regions. In 1960, he became the first Catholic priest to be elected into the Alaska State Legislature.
Early Life
Llorente was born in Spain and was the oldest of 9 children born to Luis Llorente and Modesta Villa. He entered the monastery at 13 and four years later, he started his novitiate at Carrión de los Condes. While in training, he developed more interest in Alaska and after years of trying, he finally received permission to visit the territory.
He arrived in Alaska in 1935 and immediately faced a lot of challenges, including the harsh cold weather and language barrier. However, these challenges motivated him and he continued his mission work. Llorente wrote stories on his experiences, including “Memoirs of a Yukon Priest” and “Forty Years in the Arctic Circle”.
Later Years
During his time away, he returned to Spain once in 1963. After retiring, he moved to Washington and played an active role in the state’s Hispanic community. Llorente also became an assistant pastor and chaplain. He died in 1989.
