He has played for a number of football clubs in countries like Argentina, Mexico and Brazil. His first senior appearance in football was with Defensor, a Uruguayan football club. During his stay with the club, he played more than 25 games.
Prior to featuring for River Plate in 2008, he had spells with clubs like Nacional, Sinaloa, UANL, and Deportivo La Coruña.
Internationally, he played three matches for Uruguay at the 2002 FIFA World Cup held in Korea and Japan. After making his senior debut in 1996, he went on to feature more than 65 times for the national team.
Since 2019, Abreu has coached and managed clubs like Paysandu, Boston River, and Always Ready.
Honors
He won a Taco Rio in 2010 and 2012. He also received a Taca Guanabara in 2010.
