Saunders Mac Lane was an American mathematician whose fame rested upon his co-founding of category theory and co-writing an algebra book, “A Survey of Modern Algebra.”
Biography
Mac Lane was born in Norwich, Connecticut and was the oldest of three boys. In 1930, he graduated from Yale University and worked briefly at the University of Chicago before moving to Germany to pursue a doctorate degree at the University of Göttingen.
He returned home and taught for several years before going back to the University of Chicago in 1947, eventually becoming department chair in 1952.
Contributions to Mathematics
In 1945, together with Sammy Eilenberg, the pair introduced the basic tenet of category theory. His book, “A Survey of Modern Algebra” remains widely used across many universities worldwide. Mac Lane was also the “father” of many future mathematicians such as John Thompson and Irving Kaplansky.
