About Sarah Grimke
Sarah Grimke was an abolitionist who advocated strongly against slavery and supported women’s rights to vote.
Early Years
Grimke was the 6th out of 14 children born to Mary Smith and John Grimke. She was interested in human rights as a child after witnessing the differences between the quality of education she received compared to her brothers. Although she learned several subjects, she still had limited access to what she could study. Grimke also formed close relationships with children of slaves living on her family’s plantation and taught her personal slave how to read and write.
Anti-slavery and women’s rights campaign
After her father died in 1817, Grimke decided to become a feminist. Together with her sister Angelina, they embarked on tours around New England speaking on women’s rights. Grimke also wrote several letters and essays, which were compiled as a book called “Letters on the Equality of Sexes and the Condition of Women.”
