About Santiago Cañizares
Santiago Canizares is a former Real Madrid Youth Academy product who predominantly played for Spanish football clubs, including Valencia Celta de Vigo. He retired from football in 2008 to explore interests as a rally driver.
Early Career
Canizares was born in Madrid, where he began his career with Elche CF, CP Mérida, and RC Celta de Vigo before making his La Liga debut with the Galicians in 1992. He later joined Real Madrid. He began at Madrid’s C-team. He eventually joined the first team but failed to establish himself there as he was twice loaned out – first to Elche and later to Merida.
In 1992, he signed for Celta and made more than 70 appearances in two years. He then returned to Real Madrid and started making first-team appearances for the club. From 1994 to 1998, he made over 40 appearances for Real Madrid.
In 1998, he relocated to Valencia, where he played in 418 official matches and won numerous prestigious awards, including two La Liga championships and the 2004 UEFA Cup. After winning the Zamora trophy four times for the best goalkeeper with the most shutouts, Canizares announced his retirement in 2008.
He represented Spain on the various youth sides, including the Under-21 and Under-23. With the latter, he won an Olympic gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona.
The goalkeeper made his debut for the senior side in 1993. He would go on to be capped more than 40 times for Spain, from 1993 to 2006.
Driving Career
Canizares took part in a scoring event for the Spanish Rally Championship for the first time in October 2010. He won the Rally de la Cerámica on June 17, 2017.
