About Samuel Morse
Samuel Morse was an American inventor and artist best known for being the co-inventor of the Morse Code and for his instrumental role in the invention of the telegraph. He was also an accomplished painter whose most notable paintings include Landing of the Pilgrims, Dying Hercules and The Gallery of the Louvre.
Family Life
His first marriage was to Lucretia Pickering Walker in 1818. The marriage produced three children and ended when Lucretia died in 1825. His second and final marriage was to Sarah Elizabeth Griswold in 1848. The marriage produced four children.
Trivia
Despite receiving a patent for the telegraph in 1847, he was challenged in the U.S. Supreme Court in 1853 over the patent in what became known as The Telegraph Patent Case (O'Reilly v. Morse).
