About Samuel Mcintire
Samuel Mcintire, a renowned American artisan known as "the architect of Salem," is best known for his work in the Chestnut Street District, a notable example of Federal architectural style. He was the finest craftsman in New England in the late 18th century.
Family Life
He started off as a woodcarver before becoming an architect. In his union with Elizabeth Field, he had a son.
Career
Elias Hasket Derby, Salem's foremost businessman and the country's first millionaire, hired him to build or remodel a number of homes for his extended family. He learned the Palladian architectural style from books and gained a reputation among the city's elite for creating tasteful homes.
One of the best post-Revolutionary War homes in New England was the one he built for Jerathmeel Peirce.
Among his creations are busts of Voltaire and John Winthrop, which are housed in Worcester, Massachusetts' American Antiquarian Society.
