About Salvador Allende
Salvador Allende was a Chilean politician and medical doctor best remembered for being the 29th President of Chile, a position he held from 1970 to 1973. Prior to becoming president, he held a number of important positions in his country, including the post of Minister of Health and Social Welfare. He shot himself dead when the military tried ousting him from office in a coup d’état in 1973.
Personal Life
In 1940, he married Hortensia Bussi, with whom he fathered three children: Beatriz, Carmen and Isabel Allende.
Trivia
Prior to becoming President of Chile, he had initially unsuccessfully run for presidency three times.
In 1970, he became the first Marxist to ever win an open presidential election to become president in a Latin American country.
