About Sal Mineo
Salvatore Mineo Jr. started acting on stage as a child actor in the early 1950s. In 1955, he earned his big break as John “Plato” Crawford in the motion picture “Rebel Without a Cause” alongside James Dean. The film went on to become his biggest project, earning him critical acclaim.
His role as Dov Landau in the 1960 film “Exodus”, was also very well-known. Besides acting, he also ventured into pop music in 1957, achieving chart success with the single “Start Movin’ (In My Direction)”.
Family Life
His parents, Salvatore Mineo Sr. and Josephine Alvisi, were coffin makers. His father was an Italian immigrant while his mother was of Italian origin. His siblings: Michael, Sarina and Victor were all actors.
Achievements
His performances in “Rebel Without a Cause” and “Exodus” earned him Academy Award nominations for “Best Supporting Actor”. He also received a Laurel Award and Golden Globe Award for his role in “Exodus”.
Death
He died on 12 February 1976 after a mugger stabbed him in the heart.
