About Ryuichi Sakamoto
He was an incredible record producer, pianist, composer and actor of Japanese descent.
Spouses and children
In 1972, he got married but the marriage ended in a span of two years. He left the marriage with a daughter. In 1982, he went on to marry Akiko Yano, a well-known singer and piano player. They had worked together for some time including working on a tour with Yellow Magic Orchestra. In 2006, that marriage also fell apart but their daughter Miu Sakamoto grew up to become a J-pop singer. He later got married to Norika Sora and had two children with her.
Career
In 1983, he worked on Nagisa Oshima’s “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence” as an actor and composer. He won the Academy Award for his composition work on Bernado Bertolucci’s “The Last Emperor”. He worked on other films including Bertolucci’s “The Little Buddha”, Oshima’s “Gohatto” and “Femme Fatale”.
Health Issues
In 2014, he was told he had Oropharyngeal cancer. A year later, he felt better. In about seven years, he was told he had rectal cancer and began receiving treatment. He eventually lost his battle to cancer in 2023.
