Rutherford B. Hayes was an American lawyer and politician best remembered for being the 19th President of the United States, a position held from 1877 to 1881. As president, he brought an end to Reconstruction and laid the foundation for civil service reform. Prior to his presidency, he served three terms as the Governor of Ohio between 1867 and 1877.
Personal Life
He was born to Sophia Birchard and Rutherford Hayes Jr. In 1852, he got married to Lucy Webb, with whom he fathered three sons.
Trivia
As President of the United States, he banned wines and all alcoholic beverages from the White House.
He was shot in the arm while fighting in the American Civil War.
His father died ten weeks before he was born.
