Russell Porter’s impressive and internationally acclaimed works reserved for him a permanent place in the Astronomy's Hall of Fame. The American artist and astronomer was one of the explorers in history who made an expedition into the regions above the Arctic Circle in order to reach the North Pole.
Background
Porter enrolled at Norwich University and the University of Vermont to study engineering. He then pursued architecture and art at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Notable Facts
During his trips between 1894 and 1903, he left an incredible collection of paintings, journals and letters. He also made beautiful paintings of the people and lands of the North. During World War I (WWI), he worked for the National Bureau of Standards, where he experimented with the silvering of mirrors. Much of his work has been documented as the Papers of Russell Williams Porter at the National Archives collection of Donated Materials.
Death
In 1949, the explorer died of a heart attack.
Legacy
The crater Porter on the Moon and on Mars were named after him.
