About Rufino Tamayo
With his promotion of personal liberty and ideas through his paintings, the Mexican stood out from among many of his counterparts and helped place Mexican modernism in the spotlight.
Early Life
He grew up in Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico. After his mother's death, he enrolled at the Academy of Arts at San Carlos to study drawing. After school, he was employed by José Vasconcelos at the Department of Ethnographic Drawings.
Career
After the armed regional conflicts in Mexico, he set about carving a niche for himself as a distinctive painter. He was passionate about portraying arts that symbolized traditional Mexico. His painting, “Ninõs Jugando con Fuego,” for instance, was a depiction of the injuries Mexicans suffer due to their own misdeeds. His popularity soared in spite of the unsavory responses he often expressed about the revolutionary war in his paintings. Apart from painting, he dabbled in sculpting and making prints.
Personal Life
He was married to his heartthrob, Olga for 57 years. He made 20 portraits of her in his lifetime.
Influence
His color choices were influenced by artist Maria Izquierdo who shares his belief that neutral colors was truly symbolic of the Mexican environment at the time.
