About Rudolf Diesel
German mechanical engineer, inventor and entrepreneur Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel rose to fame as the inventor of the Diesel engine. Having studied under Carl von Linde at the Royal Bavarian Polytechnic of Munich, he later worked with him (Linde) as his assistant in his ice plant and modern refrigeration construction. He branched out on his own by researching into fuel efficiency and thermal efficiency. In 1892, he earned a patent for his theory of what has become known as the Diesel engine. A year later, he reapplied and was given another patent for his update to the theory.
Family Life
He was the son of Bavarian immigrants in Paris. He was sent to Augsburg at 12 to stay with his uncle and aunt and to learn German. He was married to Martha Flasche, with whom he had three children.
Achievements
He won the Elliott Cresson Medal in 1901.
Death
He died on September 29, 1913 while aboard a ship to London but his body resurfaced after ten days. The circumstances surrounding his death remain a mystery.
