At twenty-three, German journalist Rudolf Augstein founded Der Spiegel, an international news magazine. He was also active in German politics and was a member of Germany’s federal parliament, the Bundestag.
Career
After serving in the German army during World War II, Augstein founded Der Spiegel. The magazine quickly became one of Germany’s most important investigative magazines and in 1961, Augstein was arrested for treason after publishing a controversial article. He was jailed for 103 days.
Aside working in journalism and politics, he was an avid writer and published several books, including “Otto von Bismarck.”
Later Years & Family
In his later years, Augstein lived a more private life although he continued to contribute to the magazine. He was married five times and had two children from his first marriage.
