About Roy Campanella
Due to the color line rule, American baseball legend Roy Campanella began his professional career in the Negro league where he was a member of the Washington Elite Giants. He later moved abroad and played in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, and the Mexican League.
He returned home and played in the minor leagues for teams like Montreal Royals, and the Nashua Dodgers before joining the Brooklyn Dodgers in the MLB. Mostly used as a catcher, Campanella spent over a decade at the club in which he was selected into eight All-Star teams.
Retirement and other works
His playing career came to an end in 1958 after he was involved in a serious car accident which left him paralyzed. After announcing his retirement, the Dodgers employed him as one of their scouts.
Family
Roy spent his childhood with his parents John and Ida Campanella alongside three siblings. He had two children with his first wife Bernice Ray, and three with his second Ruthe Willis. Until his death, he was married to Roxie Doles.
Achievements
Considered as one of the greatest in the history of the sport, Campanella became a Baseball Hall of Famer in 1969. He also won the World Series in 1955 with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
