According to the legendary striker, his infamous hair style during 2002’s FIFA World Cup was just a ploy to distract attention from his groin injury. His transfer fee of £19 million from PSV Eindhoven to Spanish side Barcelona was at the time the highest paid fee for any player.

He has mentioned that he struggled with the condition known as hypothyroidism, which saw him gain abnormal weight during the twilight stages of his career.
