About Roland Freisler
Before becoming a member of the Nazi Party in 1925, Roland Freisler was a solicitor in the city of Kassel. With the party, he became a member of the Prussian Landtag before he was elected into the Reichstag. After Adolf Hitler gained power, he was moved to the Prussian Ministry of Justice in 1933 where he worked as the Ministerial Director.
Later that year, the astute lawyer was appointed as the ministry’s Secretary of State. He was named to the same post at the Reich Ministry of Justice in 1934 and served in that position until 1942. After leaving office, he joined the People's Court as its president. His numerous death penalties and aggressive personality made him unpopular among the citizens.
Family
He spent his early years with his parents Charlotte Auguste Florentine Schwerdtfeger and Julius Freisler. His younger brother Oswald was also a lawyer. He was married to Marion Russegger and was survived by two children.
Education
He graduated from the University of Jena.
Trivia
His character was portrayed by Owen Teale in the 2001 film “Conspiracy”.
He represented Franz Schlegelberger at the Wannsee Conference in 1942.
He served in the German Imperial Army during the First World War.
