About Roger Sherman
Roger Sherman was one of the United States’ founding fathers. The renowned statesman began his career as a lawyer and was called to the bar in 1754. The following year, he was elected into the Connecticut House of Representatives on behalf of the people of New Milford.
In 1766, he was appointed as the justice of the state’s Superior Court and served until 1789. The same year after leaving his position, he became a member of the United States House of Representatives. In 1791 he joined the United States Senate as Connecticut’s representative.
In the history of the United States, Sherman is best known as the only person to pen his signature on all four of the country’s great papers, that is, the Constitution, the Articles of Confederation, the Declaration of Independence and the Continental Association.
Family
His parents were Mehetabel and William Sherman. He married Elizabeth Hartwell before becoming the husband of Rebecca Minot Prescott. He had 15 kids.
Death
He was diagnosed with typhoid fever two months before his demise.
Trivia
Sherman was also one of the signatories of the Petition to the King in 1774.
He abandoned his education to start a business in shoemaking.
