About Roger Penrose
Roger Penrose is a British mathematician, mathematical physicist and philosopher of science. He has risen to fame for his research in cosmology and general relativity. Theories and concepts attributed to him include the Penrose-Hawking singularity theorems, the black hole bomb, the Penrose stairs, Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse and the Newman-Penrose formalism. He is a University of Oxford Emeritus Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics and has taught at Cornell University, Princeton University, King’s College, London and Birkbeck, University of London.
Family Life
His father, Lionel Penrose was a psychiatrist, geneticist and mathematician and the son of Irish painter Doyle Penrose. His mother, Margaret Leathes was the daughter of John Beresford Leathes, a physiologist. He was married to an American woman named Joan Penrose with whom he had three sons. He also has a son with his second wife, Vanessa Thomas.
Achievements
He was a co-winner of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics. He also received the Copley Medal, Adams Prize, Albert Einstein Medal and the Dalton Medal.
Trivia
His PhD thesis was titled “Tensor Methods in Algebraic Geometry”.
