Rodolfo Neri Vela is a distinguished Mexican astronaut and scientist. He is the first Mexican citizen and the second Latin American to fly into space.
Background & Education
He is of Spanish, Italian, and Native American ancestry. However, he is a Mexican citizen born in Chilpancingo, Guerrero, Mexico. He is an alumnus of Escuela Nacional Preparatoria 2.
Neri holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical and mechanical engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). In addition, he has earned a master’s degree in telecommunications systems from the University of Essex and a Ph.D. in electromagnetic radiation from the University of Birmingham.
Career
He has worked for the Institute of Electrical Research, Mexico. Neri has also worked as the lead team engineer responsible for engineering and planning the “Morelos Satellite Program” at Mexico’s ministry of communication and transportation.
He is a lecturer and researcher at UNAM’s Faculty of Engineering.
Spaceflight
He was a payload expert on the “STS-61-B” crew aboard the space shuttle “Atlantis,” which orbited in space between November 26, 1985, and December 3, 1985. Together with his crew, they launched three communications satellites during the mission, which included the “Morelos-B” in Mexico.
