About Rod Laver
Australian retired tennis player Rod Laver truly stood out during his active years in the sport by setting records that would stand for a very long time even after he had retired.
He played amateur tennis from 1956 to 1962 and made his professional debut in the latter year. In his first year of turning pro, he became the second man in the history of tennis to win all the four Grand Slam tournaments within the same calendar year.
Family Life
He was raised as the third child of Melba Roffey and her cattleman/butcher husband Roy Laver. He was married to Mary Benson, a divorcee in 1966 and became a step-father to her three children. She bore him one biological son. They remained married until her death in 2012.
Achievements
His career ended with a total of 198 singles titles, 11 of which were Grand Slams. He also topped the world ranking for nine (non-consecutive) years.
Trivia
A multipurpose arena in Melbourne Park, Australia was named in his honour: the Rod Laver Arena.
