Roberto Durán is a former international boxing sensation. Throughout his career, Duran held world championships in the lightweight, welterweight, light middleweight and middleweight classes.
Background
Durán was raised in El Chorrillo, a district in Panama City, by parents Margarito Durán Sánchez and Clara Samaniego. Durán started his career in the slums of Panama, testing his muscles with experienced boxers in his neighborhood.
Career
Durán started his boxing career in 1968.
In 2002, he was selected by The Ring magazine as the fifth greatest fighter of the last 80 years.
Bert Sugar, a prominent boxing historian rated him as the eighth greatest fighter of all time.
Durán was conferred the best lightweight of the 20th century, by the Associated Press while fans all over the world considered him the greatest lightweight of all time.
Retirement
Durán retired from his profession at age 50, after he was reportedly involved in a fatal accident in Argentina in October 2001.
Durán ended his career with an outstanding record of 119 fights, 103 wins, and 70 knockouts.
Music
Outside boxing, Duran was involved in music production. In October 2001, Durán travelled to Argentina to promote a salsa song he had released earlier that year. While on his tour, he was involved in a fatal car accident. Following this unfortunate incident, Duran made a public statement about his retirement from his boxing career. He was 50 at the time.
Movies
Durán portrayed the drug lord Jesus Maroto in season two of the popular American series "Miami Vice''.
