Roberto Clemente was a Puerto Rican baseball player best remembered for his glittering career in the Major Baseball League (MLB) with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955 to 1972, during which he won numerous accolades. His brilliant career and life came to an abrupt end when he died tragically in a plane crash in 1972 at the age of 38.
Personal Life
He got married to Vera Zabala, with whom he had three children, including Roberto Clemente, Jr. who grew up to become a popular baseball player and broadcaster.
Achievements
In 1973, he was honored with an induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Some of his other notable achievements include winning the Gold Glove award 12 times and helping the Pirates win the 1960 and 1971 World Series. In 1973, the Pirates retired his jersey number 21.
Trivia
He was on his way to deliver relief items to earthquake victims in Nicaragua when the plane he was flying in crashed killing him and four other people on board.
