About Robert Stroud
Robert Stroud left home at the age of 13 years, and within five years he had become one of the notorious pimps in Alaska. He made the headlines after murdering a bartender in 1909. He was later arrested, found guilty and was given a 12-year jail sentence.
During his time in prison, he made a name for himself as one of the notorious inmates and posed a danger to people living around him. He was given a life sentence in 1916 after he killed one of the prison guards. Due to the threat he possessed. He was transferred to the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary in 1942.
Love for birds
While serving his jail sentence at McNeil Island, he found three sparrows injured in their nest. He catered for them and within a short period, his canary collection had grown to about 300 birds. This led to the writing of his first book titled “Diseases of Canaries” which was published in 1933.

His parents were Benjamin Franklin and Elizabeth Jane Stroud.
Trivia
His love for birds earned him the moniker "Birdman of Alcatraz".
In 1943, he was said to be a psychopath by Romney M. Ritchey, a renowned psychiatrist. His I.Q. was believed to be around 112.
