About Robert Ripley
The once small-town boy transitioned into “The Modern Marco Polo" cartoonist and author who was famed for his interesting recounts of stories that could only be incredulous. In 35 years, he journeyed to 201 countries seeking inspirations for the odd and the fantastic.
Early Life
He kick started his career as a sport cartoonist in various newspapers until he joined the New York Globe newspaper as an illustrator.
Career Highlights
In 1918, he started his bizarre-storied “Believe it or Not!” cartoon episodes. The success of the book inspired a live radio show which continued into 1948 until he switched to TV.
He started the first reality TV show that saw his fame spread quickly until in May 27, 1949, when he succumbed to a heart attack while on set.
Personal Life
He married teenage actress Beatrice Roberts, a girl 15 years his junior.
Legacy
Canada’s largest private company, the Jim Pattison Group named one of their companies “Ripley Entertainment” to honor his memory.
