About Robert Musil
Robert Musil was an Austrian novelist and philosophical writer. He was once referred to as “a giant of modernist literature”.
Early Life
The prolific writer was born in Klagenfurt – Southern Austria, but grew up in Chomutov – Bohemia. His father was an Austro-Hungarian nobleman and an engineer. Musil was sent off to a military boarding school in his overly exuberant teenage.
Though he studied engineering in the University, he had developed a love for literature, philosophy and art. He worked briefly as an apprentice engineer after his bachelors before dedicating his life to writing.
Marriage
The celebrated philosopher married Martha Marcovaldi, who was a divorcee and 7 years his senior. Robert was reported to be quite the promiscuous lad prior to his marriage.
Literary Works
The author completed his doctorate in 1909 from the University of Berlin. He authored a number of novels and two plays even as a student. Robert published his first novel – “Alumnus Törless” – in 1906. Subsequently, his plays were brought to life in theatres in Vienna and in Berlin.
The brilliant scholar was employed as a librarian in the Technical University of Vienna and then an editor with a Berlin literary journal. He, however, laid down his pen at a point to fight in the First World War.
Views and themes in his works
Robert was a devout individualist who abhorred the principles and practice of all forms of authoritarianism and collectivism. He believed in the independence and sanctity of the individual – and this theme resonated in his writings and speeches throughout his career.
Death and Legacy
The illustrious literary artist died in Switzerland at the age of 61 from a stroke. The third part of a book he was working on at the time – “The Man Without Qualities” – was published posthumously.
