About Robert Houdin
Many historians have described Robert Houdin as the godfather of the modern-day conjuring style. The renowned French magician developed an interest in the art at an early age after he was mistakenly given a magic book titled “Scientific Amusements”.
He began performing at parties and other social programs which earned him lots of admirers. In 1845, he opened his theatre known as the ‘Théâtre Robert-Houdin’ with a capacity of 200 seats. He introduced a number of tricks including "Second Sight" and "The Marvelous Orange Tree".
Family
His original name was Jean-Eugène Robert and the magician was the son of Marie-Catherine Guillon and Prosper Robert. Houdin’s first wife Josèphe Cecile died in 1843. The following year, he married François Marguerite Olympe Braconnier.
Education
He had his studies at the University of Orléans.
Trivia
He was a watchmaker before he started his work as a magician.
