Born Robert Duane Ballard, he is a renowned American professor of oceanography and a retired US Navy officer. He is widely known for his discoveries of famous wrecks.
Background & Education
He is of British-German descent and was raised in Pacific Beach, San Diego, California. He holds bachelor’s degrees in geology and chemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 1966, he earned a master’s degree in geophysics from the University of Hawaii, and in 1974, he obtained a doctorate in geophysics and marine geology from the University of Rhode Island.
Major Discoveries
After several expeditions to find the famous “RMS Titanic” wrecks had failed, Ballard’s team successfully found it on September 1, 1985. The Navy sponsored their trip, and they deployed Ballard’s new deep-sea robotic craft, “Argo,” in finding the Titanic’s debris.
In 1989, he led a team to the German and French coast in discovering the wrecks of the “battleship Bismarck.” In 1998, he found the wrecks of the “USS Yorktown (CV-5),” which had sunk during “Battle of Midway” in World War II.
With the help of the National Geographic Society in 2002, he found the wreck of President John F. Kennedy’s “PT-109.”
He has published several books on the specifics of his various discoveries and has documented videos of his expeditions with National Geographic.
