About Robbie Savage
Welsh soccer icon, Robbie Savage featured mostly as a midfielder during his active days as a player. After hanging his boots, Savage continued to be involved in the sports, although in various capacities broadcasting.
Playing career
Savage started his youth career, playing for Welsh soccer team Lex Glyndwr XI F.C. He continued his development as a youth player when he joined English soccer club Manchester United in 1991. He was promoted to the club’s senior team in 1994. However, the Welsh star did not make any appearance for United’s senior team. He then moved to Crewe Alexandra, where he starred in a total of 77 games and scored 10 goals.
In the summer of 1997, Savage got signed by Leicester City. He spent five seasons with the club and only left for Birmingham City in the summer of 2002, when City got relegated from the English Premier League.
After he left City, Savage went on to play for other clubs such as Blackburn Rovers and Derby County.
International career
The Welsh star’s international career can be described as successful. He made his debut for his nation’s senior national team in 1995 and went on to play in 38 more games for his nation. He scored two goals at the end of his senior career. His first goal was in 1997 against Turkey.
Broadcasting career
In his media career, the soccer icon has been involved in various punditry roles and has worked with notable sports channels including ESPN and BT Sport.
Family
Colin and Valerie Savage are his parents. He has been married to Sarah. The couple got married in 2002 and they share two sons together. One of his sons, Charlie Savage, is a soccer player who signed a professional contract with Manchester United in 2021.
Trivia
As a player, Savage was noted for his very energetic style of play. His robust tackling earned him numerous yellow cards. At one point he was the player with the highest number of yellow cards in the English Premier league’s history.
He won the League Cup in 2000 with Leicester City.
He was educated at Ysgol Bryn Alyn.
Savage brought the curtains down to his playing career in May 2011.
He is also an author and has published a handful of books including his autobiography “Savage!”, which was published in 2011.
