About Roald Amundsen
Roald Amundsen was a renowned Norwegian explorer who made history in 1911 for leading the first expedition to reach the South Pole. In 1926, after joining an expedition to successfully fly to the North Pole, he became the first person in history, without any dispute, to visit both the South and North poles.
Family Life
He was the fourth son of Hanna Sahlqvist and Jens Amundsen, who was a ship owner.
Trivia
During his expedition to the North Pole, he almost lost his life after a polar bear furiously attacked him.
In 1928, while on a rescue mission in the Arctic, the plane he and his crew were aboard disappeared. It is believed that the plane crashed and killed all aboard. His body was never found.
