About Rick Majerus
Basketball coach Rick Majerus played football briefly for the Marquette University’s freshman basketball team. He was on the school team between 1967 and 1968. He is more famous for his career as a coach, which has seen him handle a number of basketball teams, notching many well-known awards and honors in the process.
Career
Majerus embarked on his journey in coaching when he became the assistant coach of the basketball team of his alma mater, Marquette University. He worked in that role between 1971 and 1983, after which he was employed as the team’s head coach.
In 1986 he was hired by the Milwaukee Bucks for the position of an assistant coach and worked under Don Nelson, who was at the time the team’s head coach.
He returned to college coaching, handling Ball State University’s basketball team in 1987 and in 1989 he was hired by the University of Utah to serve as the institution’s basketball team’s head.
In 1989 he joined the University of Utah. He spent 15 seasons there and went on to enjoy one of his best seasons as a head coach in the 1997-98 season. That season, he led the university’s basketball team to a second place finish during the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament in 1998.
Between 2004 and 2007 he served as a sports analyst for the cable channel ESPN.
He made his return to college basketball coaching in 2007. He signed a contract to coach the University of Saint Louis’ basketball team.
Family
The basketball star was born to a factory worker named Raymond Majerus, who also held the position as United Auto Workers’ secretary-treasurer. His mother is Alyce. Tracy and Jodi are the names of his sisters.
Achievements
In November 2019 he became an inductee of the College Basketball Hall of Fame.
He worked as an assistant to Don Nelson in 1994 during the FIBA World Championship and won gold for the US national basketball team.
He was named Playboy Magazine’s “Coach of the Year” on two occasions, in 1992 and 1998.
Basketball Times named him “National Coach of the Year” in 1991.
Education
Majerus completed his studies at Marquette University in 1970, graduating with a degree in history. Prior to that, he studied at Marquette University High School, completing his studies in 1966.
Facts
During his time as assistant coach at Marquette University he served under Al McGuire. He also worked with Hank Raymonds.
In 1989 he had heart surgery. Since then he continued to battle heart-related problems, which eventually contributed to his death in December 2012.
His father also died of a heart attack in 1987. That same year, his mum was diagnosed with cancer. His mum died in 2011.
