About Richard Trevithick
Richard Trevithick was one of the most famous and brilliant British engineers and inventors in the 1700s and 1800s. He was widely known for successfully constructing the world's earliest working railway steam locomotive in 1803.
Background & Early Life
He was born in Tregajorran, England, an affluent mineral mining town in England in the 18th to 19th century. He attended a village school in Cambone. However, he showed low interest in his education.
As the son of a miner, he began working at "East Stray Park Mine" at age 19. Trevithick showed great enthusiasm towards his work at the time.
Career & Invention
With his experience in mining engineering, he became an engineer with "Ding Dong Mine" in 1797. At this company, Trevithick began pioneering the usage of highly pressurized steam in rail transport. Working with Edward Bull and several other engineers, they did numerous research and experiments on the construction and usage of high-pressure engines.
On 21 February 1804, his research paid off when he completed the construction of the first working railway steam locomotive. The machine's first journey took place at a tramway in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.
Death
He died of pneumonia at age 62 on April 22, 1833, in Dartford, Kent, England.
