About Richard Stallman
Richard Matthew Stallman, also popularly referred to by his initials RMS, is a programmer and an advocate for the free software movement. A graduate of Harvard University, where he received an undergraduate degree in physics, Stallman joined the community of hackers in his first year.
He created the GNU Project, a free computer operating system, in 1983. Because of his passion for ensuring that software users get full access to programs without restrictions, he founded the Free Software Foundation in 1985.
Personal Life
He has Jewish ancestry. He speaks fluent Spanish and French besides English. He also identifies as an atheist.
Achievements
He has received awards such as the Grace Murray Hopper Award, Yuri Rubinsky Memorial Award and the Pioneer Award.
He also has honorary doctorates from the likes of Concordia University, University of Glasgow, Lakehead University and the National University of Cordoba.
Trivia
After being accused of condoning underage prostitution because of comments he made about the scandal involving Jeffrey Epstein, he stepped down from his position as the Free Software Foundation President.
