About Richard Sorge
Former German journalist and Soviet military intelligence officer Richard Sorge was a spy in Germany and the Empire of Japan.
His Life and Death
Sorge served in the Germany Army during the First World War, and after the war, he obtained a doctorate in political science from the University of Hamburg.
Espionage
“Ramsay”, which was his code name, became a member of the Communist Party in Germany in 1919 and moved to Moscow in 1924. After five years in Moscow, the Communist Party sent him to China to create a spy ring. In China, he worked undercover as a journalist and proved himself to be a loyal German. He became a member of the Nazi Party in 1993.
Military Intelligence and World War II
The former military intelligence officer was then sent to Japan and he became the political advisor to the German ambassador, Major General Eugen Ott. He made a report to the Russians in 1941 that 170 German divisions would launch an attack along the Soviet Frontier on June 20th. The former spy again made a report in August 1941 that the Japanese Army was planning to advance southward against Pacific targets rather than northward against U.S.S.R.
Capture and Execution
He was arrested by the Japanese in October 1941 and was executed.
