About Richard Holbrooke
Richard Holbrooke, born Richard Charles Albert Holbrooke was a well-known American diplomat, author and journalist. He held the positions of the US ambassador to the UN (United Nations) and US ambassador to Germany.
Early Life & Education
The diplomat was born in New York City, USA. However, he was of Polish Jewish descent. He is an old student of Scarsdale High School. In 1962, he obtained his bachelor’s degree in history from Brown University.
Career Highlights
In 1962, he was appointed to the “Foreign Service” and served in Vietnam for the next six years. He then served as a Peace Corps director in North Africa (Morocco) between 1970 and 1972.
He served as an editor, director and chairman of several media agencies, corporations and companies such as “Foreign Policy”, “Brown Daily Herald”, “Lehman Brothers” and “Crédit Suisse First Boston”.
Between 1993 and 1994, he was the US ambassador to Germany.
In 1995, he became famous when he partnered with ex-prime minister of Sweden Carl Bildt to broker peace agreements among certain warring factions in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The agreement helped for the signing of the “Dayton Peace Accords”.
From 2009 to 2010, he served as the special US representative to Pakistan and Afghanistan under President Barack Obama.
Death
He died aged 69 on December 13, 2010 after battling complications of aortic dissection.
