Richard Andrew Gephardt is a renowned American politician and lawyer who belongs to the Democratic Party. He was a United States Representative from Missouri between 1977 and 2005.
Family
He is the son of Loreen Estelle and Louis Andrew Gephardt. He got married to Jane, with whom he has three children, Matt, Katie, and Chrissy.
Education
He attended the former Southwest High School in 1958. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Illinois’ Northwestern University in 1962. Three years later, he earned a law degree from the University of Michigan Law School. He was admitted to the Missouri Bar that same year.
Political Career
He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1977, representing a district from Missouri. The Missouri-born politician remained in the House from 1977 to 2005, when he retired from politics to become a lobbyist. While in the House, he became the Chair of the House Democratic Caucus from January 3, 1985 – January 3, 1989 and served as the House Majority Leader, a position he held for six years before becoming the Leader of the House Democratic Caucus in January 1995. He also worked as the House Minority Leader from 1995 to 2003. He was preceded by Robert H. Michel and his successor was Nancy Pelosi, the first female to become speaker of the House.
After leaving the House in 2003, he went on to open a consulting and lobbying firm Gephardt Group, becoming the president and CEO.
He also became a member of the International law firm DLA Piper where he served as a strategic advisor in the state affairs practice group from June 2005 to December 2009.
