About Richard D. Parsons
Few people have donned the hats of businessman, political powerbroker, lawyer, and authoritative voice on government issues with as much ease as American corporate legend Richard Parsons. Although he was educated as a lawyer and rose to prominence, he did not pursue a legal profession but focused on business.
Early Life
The famous businessman was born to Lorenzo Locklair and Isabelle Parsons. Growing up as one of 5 siblings, he worked hard and was academically inclined. He graduated from the University of Hawaii and was later accepted into Albany Law School of Union University, earning a Juris Doctor in 1971.
Career
Parsons' career began to mold in 1971 when he served as an intern at the New York State Legislature. He decided to join the legal staff of then-New York governor Nelson Rockefeller in 1971 instead of joining a law firm. He stayed with the governor's office until Rockefeller was appointed vice president.
Parsons also served as Chief Operating Officer of the Dime Savings Bank of New York in 1988. The bank was in poor financial health when Parsons became its Chief Operating Officer. However, once he became CEO in 1991, he transformed the bank's fortunes and turned it profitable.
He was appointed president of Time Warner in 1995. He was later appointed the economic adviser in 2008 by President-elect Barack Obama.
Personal Life
The businessman married Laura Bush Parsons in 1968.
Trivia
Parsons was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2015. Despite being in remission following stem-cell therapy, problems in 2018 forced him to resign from his position as interim chairman of the CBS Board of Directors.
