About René Guénon
The French intellectual is remembered for his metaphysical and philosophical writings on religion and science, as well as spiritualism, traditional studies and symbolism. His works such as “The Spiritist Fallacy” denounced neo-spiritualism and pseudo-Masonic orders in the modern world.
Life outside France
Rene taught philosophy at Setif in Algeria between 1917 and 1918. In 1930, he settled in Egypt where he secured citizenship in 1945 and adhered to Islam but showed interest in other religions especially Hinduism.
Writings
In 1921, he published his first book “Introduction to the Study of Hindu Doctrines”. He then went on to write “Theosophy: History of Pseudo-Religion”, “Orient et Accident” and “Man and his Becoming”, to mention a few. His writings influenced later writers who identified themselves as “Guenonian Traditionalist”.
Criticism
Some of his views on religion were unfriendly to the conservative Catholics and his own friend, Jacques Maritain, made a failed attempt to list Rene’s books among the Catholics’ prohibited books.
Other interesting facts
He was said to have been influenced by the works and ideas of famous thinkers such as Aristotle, Plato and Ibn Khaldun.
The French philosopher in turn influenced philosophers like Julius Evola, Huston Smith and Michel Valsan.
