Early Life & Education
Born in Le Havre, he held a dual baccalaureate in sciences and the arts. He also received a law degree and a degree in Arts and Philosophy from the University of Caen.
Early Career
In 1923, he was appointed to the Chamber of Deputies. A Republican politician, Coty concerned himself with reforms and issues bordering on merchant shipping. He became a Senator in 1936 and was re-elected to the Senate in 1948 and in 1952.
As President
He was elected as president of the French Republic in December, 1953. Though he carried himself honorably, his ability to effect policy was not as impressive as his predecessor's (Vincent Auriol). He also had to deal with the political instability that marked the 4th Republic.
Family
He was married to Germaine Coty with whom he shared 2 daughters.
Accolade
He received the Legion of Honor, France’s highest civilian and military honor.
